Last week, our team had the opportunity to serve in Beat The Drum. Beat The Drum is a HIV/AIDS awareness movement that goes all over
South Africa. It is also a movie, which talks about the different myths behind HIV/AIDS and brings truth to the myths through a story. Its goal is to teach the truth to all the lies about HIV/AIDS and show Christ’s love for the people who have it.
There were three different tracts that we got to be a part of it. One tract was for the adults. Different groups split up and went out into the community doing house visits, showed the Beat The Drum movie and offered HIV testing. The second tract was for the youth. People involved in that group went to Pelsrus Primary and
J-Bay
Primary schools to educate young teenagers about the importance of abstinence. The last tract (the one I was involved) was the childrens tract. We went to different schools and taught kids how to protect themselves from being sexually abused and the importance of telling someone they can trust if someone is abusing them in that way, so they can get some help.
It was awesome to see how God really moved this week. I wasn’t very excited to do the children’s tract—I really wanted to do the youth. But as the week unfolded, God really opened my heart up to these kids. It breaks my heart to think of the abuse they could potentially face at home. What was amazing is, after we went to the different schools, I started hearing stories about some of the kids telling their teachers if they’ve been sexually abused. Even though it hurts me so much to think that they went through that, it’s awesome to see that they’re not being silent about the situation anymore. It’s amazing to see how God really worked in these kids hearts, so they won’t have to live in fear of telling anyone and they could bring truth to the situation.
